AST Environmental (AST) was established in response to the increased need for cost efficient and timely professional environmental consulting services in Alabama, the southeastern United States, and the Mississippi River drainage in general. Integrity, innovation, and efficiency are at the core of AST Environmental. We believe in maintaining open communication with our clients to ensure that their needs are met effectively and efficiently.
AST's environmental scientists and biologists are experienced in performing species assessments and habitat assessments for protected fauna and flora. The team specializes in aquatic fauna and is permitted to survey for most of the federally protected fish, mussel, and snail species in the Southeast. AST is also permitted to survey for the Flattened Musk Turtle and the Black Warrior Waterdog
AST personnel are recognized leaders in National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) analysis and documentation. We pride ourselves in our proven ability to assist our clients in successfully stepping their projects through the regulatory and agency interaction processes.
AST has extensive experience in conducting wetlands assessments, delineations, mitigation, and permitting in accordance with the US Army Corps of Engineers Wetlands Delineation Manual, 1987 and the Clean Water Act.
AST's Aquatic Resource Team is available to assist clients with projects involving aquatic resource alterations. The team is experienced in project planning and preparing US Army Corps of Engineers and joint Tennessee Valley Authority permits for various activities involving stream alterations. The team is also experienced with Rosgen stream classification for channel assessment and design.
AST is experienced in various aquatic survey techniques including EPA Rapid Bioassessment. AST's Aquatic Resource Team is equipped to perform population studies for aquatic organisms and water quality assessments in accordance with various state and federally prescribed protocols.
AST can work with businesses and organizations to develop and implement biodiversity conservation plans, protecting and preserving ecosystems and promoting sustainable use of natural resources.
AST has worked extensively with State, County, and City engineers on road and bridge projects. We have worked on linear infrastructure projects such as electrical transmission lines as well as petroleum, natural gas,water and sewer pipelines throughout the region.
AST assists clients in meeting a full range of environmental compliance challenges. We pride ourselves in staying abreast of the continuously changing world of environmental policy
AST can provide NPDES services which include permit applications and updates, sampling, analyses, and required reporting and correspondence on our client's behalf.
AST will prepare and submit the required forms and Construction Best Management Practices Plan (CBMPP) for land disturbance areas, including borrow and waste disposal areas. AST's field inspectors are on call to conduct storm water BMP inspections.

Dr. Richardson’s expertise includes federally listed bivalves, snails, reptiles, amphibians, and fish, as well as eDNA sampling and processing, wetland mitigation, benthic macroinvertebrate stream surveys, and non-native aquatic species. He has served as an expert witness in numerous cases involving environmental and listed species issues. Dr. Richardson served 10 years as the director of the Alabama Rare and Endangered Species Research Center at the University of North Alabama and has 32 years of teaching ecology and aquatic ecology at the University.
